Sometimes, my students in Hsinchu tell me, "My hands are too small to play guitar!" Actually, many famous guitarists like Angus Young from AC/DC have relatively small hands but play brilliantly. Here are some practical tips to help you play scales and chords more comfortably, even if you have small hands.
🖐️ Finger Stretching for Scales: Pinky-First Method
Many players struggle to stretch their index and pinky fingers across three frets when playing the minor pentatonic scale. The problem is often that the palm is too far from the neck’s bottom. The suggested approach is to place your pinky on the target note first, then stretch your index finger back to its note. This naturally guides your hand and thumb into the right position for the stretch.
🎼 Finger Stretches for Chords: Using Adaptations and Practice
If open chords are challenging, try practicing with a capo on the 3rd fret and move it down one fret each week. This gradually increases the fret spacing, helping your hand adjust. For difficult barre chords, practice extended diatonic scales on the higher frets (7th and above) and slowly move down towards the wider lower frets.
✅ Additional Tips for Small-Handed Guitarists
- Choose guitars with narrower necks or smaller fret sizes, such as 3/4 size guitars.
- Keep your hands relaxed to avoid strain and fatigue.
- Practice in sections to allow your hand muscles to adapt gradually.
Having small hands isn’t a problem— with the right practice techniques, anyone can find comfort and success on the guitar.
